Why free alternatives, and are they really free?

A licence for a popular commercial face can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars per desktop seat, and most foundry licences also cap how many users or domains a webfont can serve. The alternatives here are Google Fonts: open-source faces released under the SIL Open Font License, which lets you use them in websites, apps, print, marketing and commercial products with no payment and no attribution required.

These are curated stand-ins matched by measured letter shapes — x-height, stroke weight, contrast and width — not vague stylistic suggestions. They are not perfect clones, and they are not the originals. For brand work where the exact typeface matters, buy the licence; for everything else, the free twin is usually indistinguishable at reading sizes.

How the pairing is measured

Each free alternative is ranked against the commercial face using the same four metrics the font finder uses: relative x-height, stem weight, stroke contrast and average letter width, normalised so a close score means a close silhouette. Fonts that are commonly paired with the target (like Montserrat for Gotham or Inter for Helvetica) are preferred when their measurements agree.

Not sure which paid font you're looking at?

Upload the image to the font finder. It will match the letterforms against the free library and, when the shape resembles a commercial face in this directory, surface the free stand-in directly in the results. You can also browse the full free font library by category to start from the design direction you want.
